Trauma Informed School

The Ashwood Academy uses a Trauma Informed approach when working with our young people. This approach is not a quick fix. We look at the child as a whole (including all staff from TA to admin staff, using the same approach/ language across the school).

It's about repetition to repair any damage and being consistent with how we engage with our students (using PLACE which stands for playful, loving, accepting, caring and empathetic).

Student wellbeing & mental health is our highest focus, because we understand students who have experienced trauma and are at a point of crisis, are often not able to access their academic work, so the language and approach we use needs to be repeated 100 times to link in repairing that potential damage.

We are proactive rather than reactive and use a restorative approach to behaviour rather than punishment. This allows us to build trusting relationships with our students to support them in making the right choices.
